why i made this.

I've always spent a lot of time in the sun. Surfing, skiing, working outside — whatever it was, I was out there and sunscreen was a necessity. Once I decided I didn't want to put chemicals on my body anymore, I had a hard time finding something that actually worked and didn't cost a fortune. Then I discovered tallow. Tried it on a sunburn, and it worked better than anything I'd used before. That sent me down a rabbit hole. One day in El Salvador it clicked — why not make my own sunscreen with tallow? So I did. Now I'm sharing it.

How to use

It sets firm. Break the surface, grab a small amount, and rub it in thoroughly. Zinc works in thin layers — don't overdo it.

Why tallow?

Tallow's fatty acid profile is closer to human skin than almost any plant oil. It absorbs without sitting on top, supports the skin barrier, and carries the zinc well. We use grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow from clean sourcing.

is it reef safe?

Yes. Cowabalm uses non-nano zinc oxide, which means the particles are too large to be absorbed by coral. It contains no oxybenzone, octinoxate, or other chemical filters linked to coral reef damage. Every ingredient in Cowabalm belongs in the water!

What's the SPF?

Cowabalm contains 22% non-nano zinc oxide. We haven't run a formal SPF lab test yet — we're not going to claim a number we haven't certified. At that concentration you're getting meaningful broad-spectrum protection.

Can I use it on my whole body?

This is a performance balm built for maximum grip — it needs to be rubbed in thoroughly. It works best on face, neck, shoulders, and arms. It's not designed as a full-body lotion. Use it where it matters most.

Is there a white cast?

There's some — zinc oxide is white. Rub it in fully and it blends down significantly after 10 minutes. We use castor oil specifically to help disperse the zinc. Not invisible, but not ghost face either.

Will it melt in my car or bag?

It's a tallow balm — extreme heat can soften it. We've formulated it to hold up to 120F, but leaving it in a hot car for hours isn't ideal. If it softens, put it somewhere cool. It re-solidifies and performs the same.

Where does it ship from?

Boise, Idaho. Every tin is made and shipped by hand. Orders go out within 2–3 business days.
